  • Why is MRSA a problem?

MRSA is a group of bacteria that cause infections and which have developed the ability to resist the effects of of certain antibiotics. This means that unless the resistance of a particular strain is known, there is a strong possibility that antibiotic treatment will not be effective.

  • Can MRSA be treated?

MRSA can be successfully treated if the particular resistance is discovered and the right antibiotic used as early as possible. In dogs particularly MRSA seems to be more easy to treat if the right treatment is started early enough.

  • How can we tell if an infection is caused by MRSA?

The outward signs of an infection caused by MRSA are the same as for most other infections; inflammation, raised temperature around the infection, sometimes the infection will produce pus. The only way to tell if MRSA is present is by sending a swab to a laboratory for analysis. This will show which antibiotics will kill the bacteria and which ones won’t.
